Until now, I have grown over 18 types of tomatoes. This is a “short” list of the absolute best tasting tomatoes you can grow in if your home garden or backyard if you have a small space; or you are a beginner and want to grow just a few of the very best. From sweet and delicate, to complex and smoky flavors; I’m sure you will find one you that love in this list. Texture also influences in this list of the best tomatoes. Keep in mind that this is MY top very best tomatoes list. For some of you, it may be a bit different, for example, I like sweeter and less acidic tomatoes. I also prefer tomatoes with less water content and meatier. Doesn’t matter which you decide to grow, I guarantee all these are winners, especially if you compare them with store-bought tomatoes. Pineapple
Up until now, this is my favorite tomato I have tasted and grown. The fruit is large and yellow in color with a little red at the top. The taste is delicate and less acidic. You could snack on it, as its taste is sweet and fruity, and the texture is meaty. This is an indeterminate heirloom type tomato, and the productivity of the plant is high.
Paul Robenson
The flavor of this tomato is AMAZING! You will find Paul Robenson in almost every list of “best tomatoes”, it really is very good. Paul Robeson has a brick-red color, a smoky-sweet flavor, and meaty texture. However, the productivity of the plant is low. I think I once heard that good perfumes come in small bottles; I think this is what happens here, so make sure you grow more than one plant if you have the space.
Better Boy
Better boy is a hybrid type of tomato, it is a medium-large size tomato at around 1 pound, more acidic than the others mentioned in this list but very balanced. The plant is very productive, and very disease resistant as it was breaded for these qualities. This is the perfect classic red tomato you could compare with the ones you’ll find at the grocery store, but 100 times better.
Big Boy tomato is its brother, with very similar taste and other qualities and characteristics, but larger in size.
Dr. Witchy
This is another heirloom beefsteak type tomato. Dr. Witchy is orange in color, and has solid and smooth texture, and a sweet taste. This variety produces heavy yields. I really love this one as well.
Thorburn’s Terra-cotta
This is such a beautiful tomato; it has an orange and a mix of green that resembles in a beautiful a terracotta color, and the inside color is so interesting and eye catching. It is sweet, but not too sweet, I would say it has the right balance between acidity and sweetness, and a nice floral aroma. Per Rare Seeds, the site where I buy almost all my tomato seeds; it yields heavily mid-season and then drops it production once temps start to drop, in my case, and I have to say I have grown it only once, my plant did not produce a lot, and it could be because of many reasons but I can say it definitely was worth it to grow, and I will grow again this season.
